Combining the new development for the Stedelijk Museum
's-Hertogenbosch (SM's) with the extension of Het Noordbrabants
Museum has created an attractive museum quarter in the historical
city centre of Den Bosch. Contemporary art is merged with regional
art, culture and history round the listed garden of the former
government palace dating from 1768.
Since 1987, following the conversion by architect Wim Quist, Het Noordbrabants Museum has been housed in this listed building. Bierman Henket architecten has renovated the former government palace in its entirety. The structure of the palace has been restored to its original state wherever possible - a succession of period rooms each with its own colour scheme. A museological route threads through these period rooms and the palace is now wholly open to the public. The front of the building has been restored to its original state. Metal outer shutters have been fitted at the back of the palace to serve as sun screening. The Koetshuis on the forecourt now houses an automatic ticket machine.
In order for this former residential palace to accommodate Het Noordbrabants Museum with its contemporary museum function, the floors were strengthened and various doors widened. Air-conditioning and security systems complying with the strictest requirements for museums have been hidden from sight in the walls and ceilings. This renovation process entailed continually making a comparative assessment between the technical and functional requirements and the historical value of the original building.
The former Provinciale Griffe, the provincial registry, a nineteenth-century listed building by architect J. van Lokhorst, is situated between the palace and the SM's new build. The registry houses the shared functions such as an auditorium, a restaurant, a staff canteen and offices. The stairwell and corridors have been fully restored to their original state. The original colour scheme has been thoroughly researched and restored. The various rooms, facilities and other areas have been renovated and, depending on the function, modern technology has been installed.
The archives building, formerly part of the Provinciale Griffie, has been restored and space created for the Erfgoed Brabant and the Provinciaal Archief Bodemvondsten archives. This building's historical function has been restored, but not without complying with modern-day requirements regarding usage, climate and safety.
