Art window unveiled as scaffolding is removed!

The renovation work on the monumental post office for Museum van Bommel van Dam is progressing steadily. The art window, one of the eye-catchers of the new museum in Venlo, is now visible from the street. This window is cladded with aluminium envelopes.

The roof now features a new art window: the end point of the public route straight through the building. You can look towards the station from here and see the tip of the tower of the town hall on the Markt. The art window is cladded with folded aluminium shingles. The shape and the folds refer to envelopes and thus to the history of the monumental post office. “We have opted for an overlapping shingle structure to align nicely with the organic shapes. The flaps of the envelopes lie flat, they fold up in the curves. This accentuates the shape. The flaps provide depth and shade. This creates a varied colour image, and the facade skin will be different at every moment of the day,” architect Yvonne Segers explains. In addition to this art window, a new park entrance is a major contemporary intervention. An intermediate section built in the 1980s makes way for a contrasting entrance. You will soon be able to look inside from the new forecourt and catch a glimpse of the exhibition. The new escalators for the monumental entrance of World Trade Center Rotterdam have been placed and taken into use: an extraordinary eye-catcher, provided with two landings and therefore unique in the Netherlands. At the same time, the monumental natural stone stairs have regained their original wide size.
